The FxPro identity check, done once
Verification is a document-matching exercise, and almost every rejection is a mismatch rather than a missing paper.
Finish verification before the first deposit
Complete verification before you send any money, because an unverified account can accept a deposit that then sits unusable while the check is resolved. Doing it in that order means the first shilling you send can be traded with, not parked.
There is a second reason. The identity check is tied to the name on the account, and a deposit made before verification can complicate the match if the payment name and the account name differ even slightly. Settle the identity first and the funding step has nothing to reconcile.
The regulator caveat is worth knowing here: FxPro is licensed by the FCA (UK), CySEC and FSCA — not by the CMA of Kenya. The identity standard you are meeting is the one those licences require, not a Kenyan one.
Which documents pass first time
Documents pass first time when they are current, complete and legible, and when the name on them matches the application character for character. A photo identity document such as a passport or national ID is the usual proof of identity, and a separate document showing your residential address is the usual proof of address.
For the address document, the requirement is that it is recent and shows your name and address as you entered them. Photograph or scan the whole page rather than a corner, keep all four edges in frame, and avoid glare or shadow across the text.
Send colour images, not photocopies of photocopies. A document that has been printed, signed, re-photographed and compressed will often fail on legibility alone, which is a rejection you can avoid entirely.
What sends a document back
The most frequent cause of a returned document is a name that does not match: a maiden name, an abbreviated first name, or a middle name present on one document and absent on another. Check the spelling against your application before you upload, not after.
The second cause is expiry or age. An expired identity document, or an address document older than the window the broker accepts, will be sent back however clear the image is. The third is a cropped or partial image where an edge or a date is cut off.
If a document is returned, correct that one item and resubmit rather than sending a fresh set of everything, which restarts the matching. Once the account is verified, our margin calculator and pip value calculator are the first things to open, so the first trade is sized deliberately.
Why FxPro must verify you before it can hold your money
The check exists because FxPro is legally required to know who its customers are before it accepts or moves their money. The entity serving Kenya is licensed by the FCA (UK), CySEC and FSCA — not by the CMA of Kenya — and those licences carry anti-money-laundering and counter-terrorist-financing duties. In practice that means identity, address and source of funds must be established before a deposit is credited to a trading account, not after. The rule is not a Kakamega Gold preference; it is a condition of the licence the broker operates under.
The law behind the check is the anti-money-laundering regime attached to each licence, and it treats a trading account like any other financial relationship. FxPro has to collect identifying information, keep copies of the documents that support it, and be able to show a regulator why it accepted you. That is why a passport or national ID, a proof of address and, in some cases, source-of-funds evidence are requested as a package rather than one at a time. The obligation sits on the broker, so it cannot waive the check or let you trade around it.
For you in Kenya, the practical effect is that verification is a gate before funding, not a formality after it. M-Pesa is the familiar funding route, but the mobile-money record does not replace the identity check; it sits alongside it. Expect the request for documents to arrive before your first deposit is usable, and treat the time spent on clear, matching documents as time saved later. The check protects the account holder as much as the broker, because an account opened in your name without it is a liability you would have to unwind.
The document mistakes that get a Kenyan application rejected
Most rejections come from four avoidable mistakes: a photograph that is blurred or cropped, a document that has expired, a name that does not match the account exactly, and a proof of address that is older than the broker's window. FxPro is checking that the document is legible, current and belongs to the person applying. A clear, full-page colour image of an unexpired national ID or passport, with all four corners visible and no glare across the text, clears the first hurdle. Anything that requires the reviewer to guess at a digit or a date will be sent back.
The second common failure is a mismatch between the name on the document and the name on the trading account. If your ID reads three names and you opened the account with two, or the order is different, the reviewer cannot confirm they are the same person. Type the name exactly as it appears on the identity document, including middle names, and use the same spelling on any bank or M-Pesa record you later supply. A marriage certificate or deed poll is the route to explaining a genuine change, not a note in the application.
The third is a proof-of-address document that does not actually show your address, or shows one that differs from what you typed. A bank statement or utility bill is useful only if your name and your current address are printed on it and it falls inside the recency window the broker sets. Screenshots, folded or shadowed photographs, and documents where the address is cut off are rejected even when the underlying bill is genuine. Check the address character by character against your account before uploading.
What happens to a deposit sent before verification is complete
A deposit made before approval is not lost, but it is not tradable either. FxPro will typically hold the funds in the account while the verification is outstanding, and the money cannot be used to open positions until the check clears. The deposit is recorded against your account, so it is not returned automatically; it simply sits unusable. That is why sending M-Pesa before the documents are approved creates a waiting period you control the length of, not the broker.
The practical risk is that you are exposed to nothing while the funds are held, which sounds safe but is not neutral. Your money is committed to an account you cannot trade, and if the verification then fails — because a document is rejected or a name does not match — you face a withdrawal process to get it back rather than a simple cancellation. Withdrawal to the same M-Pesa route is the normal path, but it takes time and depends on the account being fully identified first. Funding after approval avoids that loop entirely.
The clean sequence is to submit identity, address and any source-of-funds evidence, wait for approval, and only then send M-Pesa. If you have already deposited, check the account status before assuming the money is available, and complete any outstanding document request promptly. Do not send a second deposit to speed things up; it adds another record to reconcile without shortening the check. The deposit will be usable once the account is verified, and not before.
The suitability questionnaire and what your answers actually change
The suitability questionnaire is how FxPro records whether leveraged gold trading is appropriate for you, and your answers determine whether the account is opened with the standard setup or with restrictions. It asks about your trading experience, your understanding of margin and leverage, your financial circumstances and your objectives. The answers do not change the price of a trade, but they can change what you are allowed to do — for example whether you are offered the full leverage cap that applies to the entity serving Kenya, or a lower one.
Answering honestly matters because the questionnaire is a protection that works in your favour. If you overstate your experience, you may be given access to the maximum leverage available, which is a cap and not a setting to aim at; at that cap a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 margin, and the same position moves far more sharply against a thinly funded account. If you understate it, the broker may limit leverage or ask for more information. Either way, the record is what the broker relies on if there is a later dispute.
The questionnaire is not a pass-or-fail exam and there is no bonus for claiming expertise. Its purpose is to match the product to the person, and gold (XAU/USD) at 100 oz per standard lot with a pip of 0.01 is a leveraged instrument where losses can exceed the margin posted. Treat the questions as a record of fact: your real experience, your real capacity to absorb loss, your real time horizon. If your circumstances change later, tell the broker rather than leaving a stale profile on file.
Proof of address accepted in Kenya and how recent it must be
FxPro accepts proof of address that is a formal, third-party document showing your name and your current residential address, and it must fall inside the recency window the broker sets at the time of the request. In Kenya the usual acceptable forms are a bank statement, a utility bill such as electricity or water, or a formal letter from a recognised institution, provided the address printed matches the one on your account. The exact age limit is set by the broker and can change, so confirm the current window in the document request rather than assuming a fixed number of months.
What makes a document acceptable is not the logo but the combination of name, address and date. The name must match your identity document and your trading account; the address must be your current one, written the same way you entered it; the date must be recent enough to satisfy the broker's window. A document that is genuine but six months older than the window is still rejected. If you use a bank statement, make sure the page shows your address and not just transactions, and that the statement period is visible.
Mobile-money records are useful for funding but are not usually accepted as proof of address on their own, because they may not carry a full residential address in the required form. If your name appears differently on the document from the account — for example a shortened first name — fix the account spelling or supply the supporting certificate rather than editing the document. Upload a full-page colour image with all corners visible; a cropped or glare-affected photo is treated as unreadable even when the underlying bill is valid.
When the name on your document and the name on your card differ
A mismatch between the name on your identity document and the name on the card or M-Pesa account you fund with is treated as a discrepancy that must be explained, not ignored. FxPro's obligation is to know that the person funding the account is the person who owns it, so a payment from a card in a different name — a spouse, a parent, an employer — will normally be held or returned until the link is documented. The clean fix is to fund from an account in your own name that matches your verified identity.
If the difference is a genuine name change, the route is a supporting document: a marriage certificate, a deed poll or a statutory declaration that bridges the old name and the new one. Supply that alongside the identity document so the reviewer can see the chain. If the difference is simply a spelling or order variation, correct the account details to match the identity document exactly, and ask the broker how to update the record. Do not ask a third party to send funds on your behalf as a workaround; it creates a source-of-funds question that is harder to answer.
For M-Pesa funding, the name registered on the mobile-money account should be the same person as the trading account holder. Where it is not, expect a request for evidence of the relationship and of the source of the funds. The safest pattern is one identity, one name spelling, one funding route. That consistency is what lets the reviewer approve quickly and what protects you if a withdrawal is later questioned. A mismatch is not automatically fatal, but it always adds a step.
