Trading XAU/USD on the FxPro platform
Finding the instrument, sizing the order and placing the exit are three separate actions, and doing them in that order is what keeps a gold trade deliberate.
Finding XAU/USD in the terminal
XAU/USD is the code you search for, on MT4, MT5, cTrader or the FxPro app. Open the instrument list or the market watch, type the code, and add gold to your watchlist so it is one click away rather than buried in a folder of metals.
Confirm the contract details before you trade: one standard lot is 100 ounces, and one pip on this instrument is 0.01. Those two numbers are what every calculation below rests on, and they are the same on every platform the broker offers.
Open the chart and set the timeframe you actually intend to trade. The reference price shown in our examples is around 4275.0, which is there to make the arithmetic concrete, not a forecast of where gold will be when you read this.
Sizing the order before you click
Size the position from the risk, not from the margin. Decide what a losing trade may cost you in shillings, convert it to dollars, and let our position size calculator turn that into a lot size on XAU/USD given the distance to your stop. This is the step that separates a planned trade from a hopeful one.
Our pip value calculator then tells you what each 0.01 move is worth at that lot size, and our margin calculator shows what the position ties up at the leverage cap that applies to the entity serving Kenya. As a worked reference, at that cap a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 in margin.
Note the difference between margin and risk. Margin is what the broker holds while the trade is open; risk is what you lose if the stop is hit. A position can meet the margin requirement comfortably and still be far too large for your account.
Set the exit with the entry
Place the stop loss and take profit in the same order ticket as the entry, not after the position is open. Setting the exit at the moment of entry forces you to decide the invalidation level before the position can influence your judgement.
On gold, a stop expressed in dollars of risk converts to a price distance through the pip value, so the two calculations are the same piece of arithmetic seen from different sides. Our profit calculator shows the outcome at the target net of what you expect the trade to cost.
Leverage is a cap, not a setting to aim at, and trading gold on margin carries the risk of losing more than you deposited. If the numbers from the calculators do not fit the account, the correct adjustment is a smaller position, not a wider stop.
XAU/USD sits among several gold symbols, and the exact code decides the contract
In the FxPro terminal, XAU/USD is the code you want, but you may see variants such as XAU/USD with a suffix or a different naming convention across MT4, MT5, cTrader and the FxPro app. Each symbol represents the same underlying metal, yet the contract specifications attached to each can differ, so the code on the ticket is not cosmetic. Always confirm the symbol name in the order window before you size a position, because a suffix can indicate a different account type or a different underlying quote source, and that changes how the position behaves.
The reason several gold symbols can appear is that platforms list separate instruments for different account types, execution models or quote feeds, and each one carries its own contract size and margin requirement. On this page the reference contract is 1 standard lot = 100 oz, with one pip = 0.01, but that applies to the specific XAU/USD symbol you select, not automatically to every gold-like code in the list. If you pick a variant by mistake, your position size and margin calculation will be wrong even if the price looks identical on the chart.
The practical check is to open the symbol specification window before trading and read the contract size, tick size and margin currency for the exact code you intend to use. In the FxPro app and on MT4 or MT5 this information is available from the symbol list, and on cTrader it appears in the instrument details. If the specification does not match 100 oz per lot, treat that symbol as a different instrument and recalculate your size from scratch rather than assuming the standard gold contract applies.
One standard lot of XAU/USD is 100 ounces, so every pip is a fixed dollar amount
One standard lot of XAU/USD equals 100 ounces of gold, and because one pip is 0.01 in the price, a one-pip move on a standard lot is worth $1.00. That relationship is fixed by the contract size, not by the broker or the platform, so it gives you a reliable way to convert a price move into money. If you trade 0.10 lots, the same one-pip move is worth $0.10, and if you trade 0.01 lots it is worth $0.01. The arithmetic scales linearly with the lot size you choose.
The contract size is the bridge between the chart and your account balance, and it is the number you need before you can interpret any stop distance. A 100-ounce lot means a $1.00 move in the gold price changes the position value by $100, so a stop placed 5.00 away from entry represents $500 on a full lot. On the 0.10-lot position referenced on this page, that same 5.00 stop represents $50. Without the 100 oz contract size in mind, a stop distance in pips has no meaning in shillings or dollars.
Because the contract size is fixed, you can calculate risk before you enter rather than after. Multiply the stop distance in pips by the pip value for your lot size, and you have the loss in US dollars if the stop is hit. From there you can convert to KSh at the prevailing rate if you want a local-currency view. This is also the figure that determines margin: at the applicable leverage cap for the entity serving Kenya, a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 margin, which is a direct consequence of the 100 oz contract.
A stop attached at the moment of entry is an order instruction, not a later decision
Setting a stop at the moment of entry means the stop-loss is submitted as part of the same order ticket, so the position cannot exist without a defined exit. On MT4, MT5, cTrader and the FxPro app, the order ticket includes a stop-loss field that you fill before you press buy or sell. This is different from adding a stop after the position is open, because the instruction is lodged with the broker at the same time as the entry and is active as soon as the position is filled.
The reason to attach the stop at entry is that it removes the moment when you are exposed without a defined loss limit. If you enter first and plan to add a stop later, there is a window in which the market can move against you while you are still deciding where the stop belongs. By placing the stop in the entry ticket, you commit to the risk distance before the position can move, which is the discipline that keeps a single trade from becoming an unplanned loss. The stop level should come from your analysis, not from what feels comfortable after the fill.
On the platforms available through FxPro, the stop-loss field in the order ticket accepts a price level, and the ticket will reject the order if the stop is on the wrong side of the entry. For a buy, the stop must be below the entry; for a sell, it must be above. This is a useful mechanical check because it forces you to think about direction and distance at the same time. Once the position is open, the stop can still be modified, but the initial protection is already in place from the first tick.
The swap line on an overnight gold position is a financing adjustment, not a trading cost you can avoid
The swap line on a gold position represents the financing adjustment applied when you hold the position past the daily rollover, and it appears as a credit or debit on your account. For XAU/USD, the swap is calculated from the difference between the cost of borrowing and lending the two currencies involved, adjusted by the broker, and it is applied to the full notional value of your position. It is not a commission and it is not a spread; it is the cost or benefit of carrying the position overnight.
The swap line matters because gold is often held for more than a day, and the financing adjustment accumulates for each night the position remains open. On a 0.10-lot position, the swap is proportionally smaller than on a full lot, but it is still applied to the 100 oz contract size behind your lot. The exact swap rate is not fixed and depends on prevailing interest rates, the broker's financing markup and the direction of your trade, so it should be checked in the platform's symbol specification rather than assumed.
You can see the swap line in the terminal's trade tab and in the account statement, where it is listed separately from profit and loss. On MT4 and MT5 it appears as a separate column, and on cTrader and the FxPro app it is shown in the position details. If you plan to hold gold overnight, the swap is part of the cost of the trade and should be factored into your risk calculation alongside the stop distance. It is a small line per night, but it is real money and it compounds over a long hold.
Margin on gold is a cap-based requirement, and the cap is not a target
The margin required to hold a gold position is set by the leverage cap that applies to the FxPro entity serving Kenya, and that cap is a maximum, not a recommended setting. At the applicable cap, a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 margin, which is the amount set aside from your account to support the trade. This figure is derived from the 100 oz contract size and the reference price of approximately 4275.0, so it changes as the price moves and as your lot size changes.
It is important to treat the leverage cap as a ceiling rather than a target, because trading at the maximum available leverage leaves very little room for the price to move against you before a margin call. The $85.50 margin on a 0.10-lot position is the minimum the broker requires, but your own risk management may call for a larger account buffer. The cap exists to limit how much exposure the broker will extend, not to indicate how much exposure is prudent for you.
Margin is not a cost; it is a deposit that remains yours unless the position loses money. However, if the market moves against you and your equity falls below the maintenance margin, the broker may close the position. On gold, where daily ranges can be wide, the distance between your entry and your stop should be the primary risk control, with margin as the secondary constraint. The $85.50 figure is a useful reference for sizing, but it should not be the only number you consider.
Platform choice changes the interface, not the contract or the risk
MT4, MT5, cTrader and the FxPro app all give you access to XAU/USD, but they present the order ticket and position information differently, and that affects how you place a stop at entry and how you read the swap line. MT4 and MT5 use a similar order ticket with a stop-loss field, while cTrader uses a different layout that separates the stop and limit orders. The FxPro app is a mobile interface that condenses the same functions into a smaller screen. The underlying contract remains 100 oz per lot on all of them.
The choice of platform does not change the contract size, the pip value or the margin requirement, because those are set by the instrument and the account, not by the software. What changes is the speed and clarity with which you can execute your plan. If you are setting a stop at entry, you need to know where that field is on your chosen platform before you trade, so that the instruction goes in with the order rather than after it. Practising on a demo account is a sensible way to learn the layout without risking money.
For Kenyan traders, the funding route is M-Pesa, and the platform you use will determine how you see your balance and your margin. The FxPro app may be the most convenient for monitoring an open position on a phone, while MT4 or MT5 may be preferred for detailed chart work. None of these platforms changes the fact that FxPro is licensed by the FCA (UK), CySEC and FSCA, not by the CMA of Kenya, so the regulatory protection you receive is that of the licensing authorities, not the local regulator.
